PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE LAB
Migrants feel the need to learn more Portuguese. They demonstrated this need during the first and second edition of the workshops. The integration is more difficult if the migrants don’t know how to talk the Portuguese language. They need it in everyday life. It was suggested to create a volunteer project in which people from the local community could be involved to teach the Portuguese language to migrants who wanted. The classes took place after work. They also suggested that the classes take place in Associação Cultural Recreativa Desportiva Zambujeirense – Local Association.
We verified throughout the project that language learning is a big difficulty to the integration of migrants into the community. However we also found that learning the Portuguese language is not only done with lessons. Non-formal education and cultural activities also serve for migrants to learn the language. The municipality of Odemira is verifying the possibility of elaborating a project in which some of these actions are combined.
